NORTH-HOLLAND Floriade 2002 The Netherlands premier horticultural exhibit known as Floriade was held from April 6 to October 20 in Haarlemmermeer, between Hoofddorp and Haarlem, a short distance from Amsterdam.
The once-every-decade event encompassed flowers, fruit trees, pines, shrubbery, vegetables and mushrooms. In 2002, Feel the Art Of Nature was the Floriade theme. The landscaper Niek Roozen incorporated a lake, local woodlands and a late 19th century dike defense wall into the 160-acre fairground. Highlights included the Valley of Flowers, planted with over one million bulbs. Foreign participants included France, Thailand, India, Chile, Malaysia, Bulgaria, Japan, Egypt, China, Kenya, Canada, Costa Rica and the U S.
Haarlemmermeer sits on a polder reclaimed from water in 1852.
