In the 17th-century, hookers were used both as fishing boats and as cargo ships in the trade with England, France, Northern Germany, and the Baltic countries. The Prins Willem was built in 1649 for the V O C and made 5 voyages to Asia before foundering in 1662 in the Indian Ocean. While they carried large cargoes, East Indiamen were also heavily armed. During the first Anglo-Dutch War (1652-4), the Prins Willem was employed as a warship, although with equally little success as the other merchantmen used for this purpose.
At the back, on the stern, is a statue of Stadholder William II, after whom the ship was named. Below the cabin lights is the coat of arms of the ZEELAND Chamber of the V O C.
