Wilhelmus van Nassouwe (William of Nassau)
ORIGINAL DUTCH WORDS--
Wilhelmus van Nassouwe ben ik van Duitsen bloed
den vaderland getrouwe blijf ik tot in den dood.
Een Prinse van Oranje ben ik, vrij onverveerd,
den Koning van Hispanje heb ik altijd geëerd.

Mijn schild ende betrouwen zijt Gij, o God mijn Heer,
op U zo wil ik bouwen, verlaat mij nimmermeer.
Dat ik doch vroom mag blijven, uw dienaar t'aller stond,
de tirannie verdrijvendie mij mijn hert doorwondt.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION--
William of Nassau am I, of Germanic descent;
True to the fatherland I remain until death.
Prince of Orange am I, free and fearless.
To the King of Spain I have always given honour.

You, my God and Lord, are my shield, on You I rely.
On You I will build; never leave me,
So that I may remain pious, your servant at all moments,
Dispelling the tyranny that wounds my heart.

LYRICS--Attributed to Marnix van St. Aldegonde, c.1568
MUSIC--Valerius (Based on Old French Soldiers' Tune), 1626
ADOPTED--1932

S P I D O BoatingTour, FLOOD BARRIER - EUROPOORT
The tour follows the extensions to the harbour area, then heads straight to the sea to catch sight of ships of ever greater dimensions. Included is an excursion to view the Flood barrier in the Nieuwe Waterweg, the final phase of the Delta Plan. A moving scale model of the Measlant barrier, a film, and a visit to the building site gives a complete picture of how this hydraulic wonder came about.

Today a premier international cruise line, the H A L was the most important passenger company between Europe and the 'New World' at New York City, with peak emmigration years being 1901-14. The massive building, incorporating many Jugendstil motifs, was built between 1901 and 1917 by architects J Muller and Drooglever Fortuin and J Muller and C B van der Tak, respectively. Today the head offices of the Holland-America Line are in Seattle (from 1977). The building on the Wilhelminakade was put up for sale in 1984. The entire area, called the 'Kop van Zuid', is the focus of a massive, 20-year re-development plan.
