Be Wa Dinant. View along N95, leaving Dinant behind. SE 74 0930. In the U S, for the sake of the roadway, this rock sentinel would probably have been dynamited, and the bits and pieces hauled away. In southern Belgium, it is carefully preserved as a flag-topped monument. |

The German travelers in Belgium and the Belgians seem to delight in the crash of the USDollar to par with the Euro.
In southern Belgium, bread (white AND brown), instead of that wonderful French baguette, for breakfast. Still no meat (as in France), but we are compensated with a plate for our bread (in France, bread was dealt with directly on the table). |

Be Wa Marcouray. Village flowers.
In WALLONIA they don't use numbers on their route signage. As there are usually multiple ways to get to a town, clarity would be improved by adding route numbers to road signs. |

Be Wa Septon (Durbuy). Château de Petite Somme, a Hare Krishna property. NNE 94 1630. While the site has hosted castles since the 11th-century, this 13th-century-neo-early-gothic-style gem dates from 1888. The Radhadesh Hare Krishna sect purchased the castle and it's remaining 15 acres (diminished from 400 when originally in aristocratic hands) in 1980, and expanded the estate to 45+ acres. It is a community of 80 adherents. http://www.radhadesh.com |

At the Hare Krishna Summer Festival, for EUR10 you get a guided tour of the château, complete run of the grounds, and a vegetarian meal. Open 'till 10 p m. To an Indian-looking woman at one entrance to the grounds, I explained that I must be in Namur by 6 p m. "So go on in for a short while--for 5 euros," she replied. A Nederlander at another entrance, when like-wise informed, made no offer whatsoever. It was EUR10.
Near the main entrance to the grounds, a plump, tall man was arranging things beneath the open hatch of a 70s-era dirty-brown, American station wagon. He was, perhaps, 55, with thin, long hair poorly covering a large, otherwise bald head, and sported many gold-colored chains around his neck beneath an open brown Nehru shirt. Swinging outside of the wrinkled, un-tucked shirt was a large peace symbol, also on a gold chain. The woman behind him, waiting silently for him to finish so they could enter and join the festivities, was quite a few years younger, nicely dressed, with well-coiffed, short flaxen hair. |
